KERALA PRACTICE SATURDAY 815-930A
Kerala style practice simply refers to the style of training one does while in Kerala. Kalari Movement founders Nicole and Andrew Hicks are Senior students of the Kerala Kalarippayat Academy and Gurukkal C.M. Sherif. Our Gurukkal Sherifka is a true pioneer in the revival of Kalarippayat in the last 30 years. He has spent over 50 years traveling around south India training with many different masters who specialized in all three styles of kalarippayat; Northern central and Southern. It is unique for all three styles to be taught and part of the discipline of just one Kalari school. That is what sets KKA and Kalari Movement apart. When you come to train with us you will get a taste of all three styles. Read more about the differences between Northern Central and Southern Styles here. In short you will build strength flexibility balance increase range of motion and more! Come ready to sweat and have a good time!

ABOUT YOUR KALARI TEACHERS
Andrew Hicks is a life long health and fitness enthusiast with a strong interest in snowboarding skateboarding mountain climbing and all things self-help and mastery. He found Kalari in 2010 when he met his now wife. He was amazed at how the practice in a very short time challenged his strong fitness background and improved all of his other athletic endeavors. He found he had better balance more explosive energy more stamina range of motion and flexibility. Through his dedication and perseverance in the practice he was trained by C.M. Sherif in all 3 styles of kalarippayattu as well as nadi and marma chikitsa alongside his wife. He was absolutely surprised and honored by the encouragement to not only teach Kalari but to train others to teach as well. Through his extensive knowledge and study in exercise science, Andrew brings a modern perspective to this ancient healing and dynamic art.
Nicole Hicks found Kalari in 2009 by way of a workshop in SLC taught by Gerhard Smidt. After that weekend workshop, she was hooked and determined to travel to India to meet and train with Gerhard’s Gurukkal C.M. Sherif who would become her Gurukkal as well. Her first trip to India was a teacher training immersion facilitated by Gerhard and Jennifer Ellen. She began teaching in 2010 and returned to India many times after to train and study at KKA with her husband Andrew. She is also a certified Ayurvedic counselor and Yoga therapist. As a senior student of KKA, she was encouraged to train people to teach Kalari in the United States with Andrew. Together they have created Kalari Movement as a way to promote Kalari and help others to find their personal best through this challenging dynamic and healing practice.
